His works offer social and political commentary on 19th century France. The Royal Academy in London is exhibiting his work, through the end of January 2014. A very interesting catalog has been written on Daumier's work, in which the essayists question the sources of his work, his personal ambitions and his "modernity."

He specifically created many copies of the same piece so as to question the value of the artist's personal touch as opposed to the value of the collective. In keeping with this, many of his pieces were not created by him personally, but by his assistants. It isn't a far jump for collectors and their lawyers to question the authenticity of the work.
