Catarina Leitão, born in Germany 1970, Portuguese, lives and works in New York. Leitão works in drawing and sculpture. Recent solo exhibitions include Number 35 Gallery in New York, 2007, and Project Room at Michael Steinberg Fine Art in New York, 2005. In New York, Leitão has exhibited at P.S.1/MoMA, Sara Meltzer Gallery, Wavehill, Glyndor Gallery and Grounds, Socrates Sculpture Park, and Andrea Rosen Gallery 2. In Portugal she is represented by Pedro Cera Gallery and had solo museum shows at the Berardo Collection and Gulbenkian Foundation. Awards and residencies include Center for Book Arts, The Triangle Arts Residency, Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
Observing the fear with which city dwellers approach nature inspired Catarina Leitão to pursue ideas for survival gear in the form of watercolor drawings and sculptural installations. Portable Private Garden is an anthropomorphic, hybrid garment and tent that contains a mysterious interior retreat filled with soft plant-like shapes. Leitão suggests ways to mediate interaction with nature that accommodate a desire to be closer to that natural world while minimizing danger or discomfort…
