What attracts me most in the work of Luis Camnitzer is his perspective toward a political art oblivious to propaganda and graphic illustration. He does not pursue it to its limits, which artists involved in militant social action would do, but this relates to the ambiguity which informs his work and his personal life…
Luis Camnitzer was born in Germany in 1937, grew up in Montevideo, and has lived and worked in New York since 1964. He has made his mark internationally not only as an artist but as a critic, educator and art theorist as well. Formally allied with the American Conceptualists of the 1960s and 1970s, over the past 50 years Camnitzer has developed an essentially autonomous œuvre, unmistakably distinguished from that of his colleagues in the US by its acutely observed detail, its acerbic wit, its ludic-lyrical qualities and its ironically metaphorical polyvalence, as well as by its solid socio-political commitment…

In his works, Luis Camnitzer often addresses issues of political repression in relation to questions of memory, identity, and the passage of time. In this series of photo-etchings, Camnitzer brings human rights violations to light. The artist states, "I have been led to the conclusion that History is the making of a self-portrait and that the more one tries to camouflage that, the further one gets from the authentic portrayal of history’s subjects."…
