Luis Geraldes

Geraldes, Luis

Luis Geraldes was born May 15 1957 BirthVale da Cerdeira, Beira Baixa, Portugal.

Scientific advancement is expressed through the use of systems of
representation bound to science, religion and art, which are in tune
with a post modernism context.  Such visual language is used to
satisfy an internal need to express a system of ideas and universal
beliefs. In my scientific endeavour there are a number of enigmatic
symbols, marks and tokens applied on the surface of the canvas to
evoke universal values and to express this pilgrimage to discover a hidden order.

The use of nuclear and atomic symbols offers the viewer
multiple layers of meaning.  On one level the symbols used suggest a
narrative order / sequence.  But beneath that surface representation
and the obvious visual hierarchy (where each symbol appears to be
positioned to suggest an order implied importance) and within another
layer there exists a subtle dialogue between symbols, a pull of
opposites and another layer of meaning.

Such visual language is used to satisfy an internal
need to express a system of ideas and universal beliefs…

values and to express this pilgrimage to discover a hidden order…

Various veils with spiritual and scientific associations are
developed to highlight a divine order. Micro-organisms, atoms,
nucleus, neutrons and protons are present to symbolize our nuclear
roots. (Word document)

“Frank, funny, truthful, ironic and in every way an entertaining account of one major American artist’s involvement in an art movement that interests everyone–and, more than that, of his own character. Jim Rosenquist is a true American original and his book ought to be read by anyone who wants to understand the last half-century of his country’s visual culture, high, low, and in between.” –Robert Hughes, amazon
