Parmi les ancêtres de la peinture d’Estève figurent Fouquet, Cézanne, Bonnard, Matisse et Léger. Ce sont les trois derniers nommés qui exercent sur Estève l’ascendant le plus direct. Si chez Léger il admire la solidité de la construction et la précision du dessin, il s’apparente à Bonnard et Matisse par l’exaltation chromatique et les justes proportions de la couleur.

Maurice Estève’s earliest influences were from cubism and in particular from Leger’s work in the 1920’s, but with a constant consciousness of the ideas of Cézanne. By the late 1930’s he was beginning to develop the use of free forms and strong but balanced colour which was to place him in the central role in the colour abstract movement for which he is now so widely admired…
