Kara Walker and Vasco Araújo: Reconstruction
Vasco Araújo locates his work in the world of opera, and his videos frequently celebrate marginal characters whose personal histories are reconstructed through his interpretive lens. In Girl of the Golden West, an unnamed woman retells the plot of a popular 1910 opera by Giacomo Puccini. The setting is the American West of the 1850s, and as her tale unfolds, Araújo asks the viewer to reexamine a “true” story set in the days of the California gold rush. The narrator, played by Houstonian Esther Guillory-Kyle, traces the struggle for power outlined in Puccini´s libretto, a struggle that is also reflected in the greater sweep of American history. Girl of the Golden West was filmed in Houston during Araújo´s tenure in the MFAH´s Core Residency Program. It was first seen in the 2004 Amalgama exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum Houston and received international acclaim when it was featured in the 2005 Venice Biennale. MFAH
