Simon Fujiwara
‘I am my work,’ Simon Fujiwara told me when I visited his studio. The implications of this revealing statement are two-fold, for not only does the artist personally deliver the performative elements of his work, but much of his material is rooted in the autobiographical. Born in Japan to a British dancer mother and a Japanese architect father, Fujiwara, who is the recipient of this year’s Cartier Award, studied architecture at the University of Cambridge, then spent time at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and became an artist. Or did he?

Simon Fujiwara
in the recent projects of fujiwara, he questions the possibility of manipulating history and affecting collective memory through the individual tales and anecdotes he tells. his passion for constructing stories and his love of writing and writers are all evident in his narrative work. he references cacophonous dialogues and contradictions in the movies of john cassavetes, woody allen, ingmar bergman…

Simon Fujiwara
Through novels, theatre plays, lectures and installations, Simon Fujiwara scripts and performs his own biography as fiction – a drama in which he plays the roles of multiple characters: artist, novelist, anthropologist, eroticist, architect, playwright…

Simon Fujiwara
Simon Fujiwara looks every inch the thrusting young archaeologist, sifting dirt and unearthing precious artefacts in an imaginary ancient city. In fact, as winner of the Frieze Art Fair’s prestigious annual Cartier Award for emerging artists, Fujiwara has created this entire underground world from scratch…
