Liz Magic Laser
Liz Magic Laser lives and works in New York City where she is currently an LMCC artist-in-residence. She recently attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program (NY) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture residency program (Maine). She earned an MFA from Columbia University in 2008 and a BA from Wesleyan University in 2003. Laser is an Adjunct Professor of Art at Columbia University and an Adjunct Professor of Art History at the School of Visual Art (NY). Her work has been shown recently at galleries in New York including Derek Eller, Southfirst, Sue Scott, Smack Mellon, and The Art Production Fund. Laser has also exhibited internationally at NT art gallery (Bologna, Italy), Karlin Hall for the Prague Biennale 4 (Czech Republic) and the Georgian National Museum for Artisterium 2009 (Tbilisi, Georgia). Julie: Itís tough to think about banks and the banking system in light of everything thatís been going on over the past year. I guess Iíve always been broke yet hopeful, but youíre not really exploring notions of wealth or lack thereof. Tell me more.
Liz: The starting point was our daily interactions with the ATM machine. I also became interested in working in this ATM vestibule space because a vast array of people pass through it. It takes on some attributes of a public space, yet it structures a highly private individual experience.
