A painter, printmaker, and filmmaker, Edward Ruscha was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1937. He moved to Oklahoma in 1956 where he studied at the Choinard Art Institute. Ruscha was associated with the Ferus Gallery group, which also included Ed Moses, Robert Irwin, Ken Price and Ed Kienholz and was influenced by the ironic irreverence of the Pop Art movement, in particular Jasper Johns.
During the 1960s, Ruscha created a series of mass-produced, cheaply printed photographic books cataloguing the various kinds of banal roadside sites one might encounter on a typical drive through the American West, such as Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1962), Some Los Angeles Apartments (1966), and Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass (1968)…
